Ian's Cannabis Journey
October 23, 2015
November 7 will be one year of whole plant treatment for Ian.
Today was our semi annual meeting with the pediatrician.. A few weeks ago, I emailed him a copy of the "trickle down" (previously posted below) effect we have observed over the past year. I was intending on speaking with him about that email today. This is important because while he has signed Ian's cannabis documents for now, he has asked me to reconsider regular pharmaceuticals just six months ago. Today was McMaster University Intern day. You meet with the Intern as though they are the doctor and then, the doctor comes in and reviews the discussion between you. Ian and I were introduced to Matthew who, is studying to be a pediatrician at McMaster. I had me a captive med student!!!! I told Matthew that Ian was on Risperdal for 9 years, hemp based CBD only for a year and a half, and now whole plant high CBD cannabis for a full year. I told him of the behaviour changes witnessed in Ian while on each of them. He had never heard of cannabis as treatment for Autism. I told him that our family had not experienced any physical attacks in seven months. I told of how he is still Autistic, but when he escalates near meltdown, he is quick to calm and generally happier and less frustrated with his surroundings. I further told him of how our family felt less stress and anxiety with him being more like him, and less like a time bomb. New school, new grade, new surroundings - no problem. I discussed Ian using Aerius for allergies for a few weeks, and Amoxycilin for a week - all while taking cannabis, and no visible side effects or drug/drug interactions were observed. Higher levels of testosterone than a year ago and no physical attacks - no problem. Last week, Ian actually expressed boredom with the foods he is eating. "That's amazing!" "New food interests recently, and no physical aggression for an extended period?" I explained that I had all of this documented on an open group FB page and that new families were sharing their success stories with me, and each other and that our kids were making the same strides. This guy was awesome! He wanted to know about extraction method, dosing, temps, times, and delivery method. When the pediatrician came in, arms crossed, Matthew told him about our meeting. The doctors demeanour changed as he listened to the intern. While he was happy to hear of our success, he said that he "still wants to see clinical evidence". "Do I need to sign anything today?" "Not today, I'll see you in April for that."
I think he's coming around. - Andrew McVicar
